Demand for Service Armadillos Leaves Questions

Service Animals for the Disabled in Shorter Supply for 2013

The difficulty in locating and then training wild armadillos fast enough to meet demand from the disabled, has left early skeptics of the service armadillo feeling validated, and its proponents asking for more resources and trainers. "It doesn't happen overnight," reports Dr. Glen Keep, principal overseer of armadillo adoption at San Diego's Center for Service Animals, "There's just a kind of compatibility between these service animals and people with disabilities who need the kind of help we  know a properly trained armadillo provides." According to Dr. Keep, such uses for armadillos were discredited until videos of the shelled mammal's uncanny service abilities hit Facebook and YouTube going viral in early Jan 2013.
